Fertilize when your lawn starts to turn green. Rather than fertilizing in the early spring, it is better to wait until the late spring,  just before the heat of summer begins and after the grass is growing robustly. You may use either slow- or quick-release fertilizer.
Using compost can be a great and natural alternative to commercial fertilizers.
